What is a P60? What it shows and where to find it

What is a P60? The end-of-year tax form your employer gives you, what the figures mean, when you get it, and how to keep it so any assistant can read it.

A P60 is the summary your employer gives you at the end of each tax year, showing how much you were paid and how much tax and National Insurance came out of it. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April, so the P60 for the 2025 to 2026 tax year covers 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026. If you were working for the same employer on 5 April, they must give it to you by 31 May.

What does a P60 show?

A P60 lists your total pay for the year from that employer, the Income Tax taken from it, your National Insurance contributions, your tax code at the end of the year, any student loan repayments and any statutory payments such as sick or parental pay. It also shows your National Insurance number and your employer's name and PAYE reference.

It is the official record of your year, and it is what lenders, landlords and HMRC ask for when they want proof of what you earn.

When do I get my P60?

You get it once a year, after 5 April, and no later than 31 May. Many employers deliver it through a payroll portal or by email rather than on paper. If you left your job before the end of the tax year you will not receive one, because you will have been given a P45 instead.

A P45 shows your pay and tax up to the day you left.

Where do I find my P60?

Check your employer's payroll or HR portal first, then your email for a message from payroll, then your paper post. If you cannot find it, our page on what to do if you have lost your P60 explains how to get a copy.

See what to do if you have lost your P60. You can also see what HMRC holds about your pay and tax on the gov.uk page for checking your Income Tax, and gov.uk explains each form on its PAYE forms page.

What do I need my P60 for?

You need it to complete a Self Assessment tax return if you file one, to claim a tax refund, to apply for a mortgage or a loan, to rent a home, to claim tax credits or benefits that ask for proof of income, and to check your employer has used the right tax code.

The Self Assessment deadline for filing the 2025 to 2026 return online is 31 January 2027, and gov.uk has the details on its Self Assessment page.

How do I keep my P60 safe and useful?

Upload it to Era's document library. Era reads the figures, files it with the rest of your documents, and lets any assistant you connect answer from it: "what was my total pay in the 2025 to 2026 tax year?" or "how much tax did I pay?" The assistant points to the page the answer came from.

If you have several jobs, upload each P60 and ask for the total across all of them.

Because the library also reads payslips, you can ask whether your final payslip of the year agrees with your P60, and how your tax code compares. Our guide to checking your tax code shows how. You can start on Era's free plan, and the pricing page lists what each plan includes.
