Claude for personal finance: how to use Claude as your financial AI

Claude becomes a financial AI once it can see your real accounts. On its own, Claude has no idea what's in your checking account. Era Context connects Claude — through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — to your bank, cards, and investments, so it can check balances, analyse spending, and remember your goals between conversations.

This guide covers what actually changes when Claude has that access, how to set it up, and what to ask once it's connected.

What does "Claude as your financial AI" actually mean?

By default, Claude has no memory of your accounts, no view into your transactions, and no way to act on your money. Every financial question you ask it is a guess based on whatever numbers you happen to type into the chat.

Era Context changes that. It's a personal finance platform built specifically for AI access: Claude, or any other MCP-compatible client, connects to Era Context, and Era Context connects to your bank, credit cards, and investment accounts. Claude reads live data through that connection instead of relying on what you remember or paste in.

What can Claude do for your personal finances once connected?

With Era Context connected, Claude can:

  • Check balances across every connected account, in real time
  • Search and analyse transactions by merchant, category, amount, or date
  • Compare spending periods — this month versus last, this quarter versus last year
  • Forecast spending based on your actual patterns
  • Find recurring charges and subscriptions, including ones you forgot about
  • Create automation rules you describe in plain English, on the Organize tier and up — Claude shows you the rule and waits for your approval before anything runs
  • Remember your goals and preferences across every conversation, not just the current one

Era Context exposes dozens of tools — and counting — spanning accounts, transactions, insights, activity, and automation. Claude picks the right ones automatically. You never need to know the tool names — just ask, and your activity log shows exactly what ran.

How is this different from just asking Claude money questions?

Anyone can ask Claude "how should I budget $500 a week" and get a reasonable, generic answer. That's Claude reasoning from general knowledge. Ask it "how much did I actually spend on takeout this month," and without a data connection, it has nothing to work with.

The difference is data access, not intelligence. Era Context is what turns Claude's reasoning into answers about your specific accounts, at chat speed, without a spreadsheet in between. See what to ask your AI about your money for two dozen examples of the second kind of question.

How do you set up Claude as your financial AI?

  1. Go to era.app and create a free Era account. The Basic tier includes two connected accounts with read-only access — enough to check balances and analyse spending. Read-write access, including automation rules, starts on the Organize tier.
  2. Connect a bank account, credit card, or investment account through Era Context. Era links your accounts through MX, a regulated financial data provider covering thousands of institutions. Your bank login is never stored by Era.
  3. In Claude Desktop or Claude Code, add https://context.era.app as an MCP server.
  4. Approve the OAuth consent screen. Every connection requires this explicit step — nothing connects silently.
  5. Ask Claude a real question about your money, like "what's my current account balance" or "show me my recurring charges."

That's the entire setup. For screenshots, the exact configuration, and troubleshooting, see the full guide to connecting Claude to your bank account.

Claude alone vs. Claude with Era Context

Claude alone Claude + Era Context
Sees your real balances and transactions No — needs manual input Yes, live via MCP
Remembers your goals between chats No — each conversation starts blank Yes, until you ask it to forget
Same memory in ChatGPT or another client Not applicable Yes — cross-agent memory
Creates automation rules for your transactions No Yes, with your approval before anything runs
Encrypted, revocable data access Not applicable — no data connected AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.3 in transit, revoke anytime

Is it safe to give Claude access to your bank accounts?

Era Context encrypts your data with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.3 in transit, and your bank credentials are never stored by Era. Connecting a new AI client requires your explicit authorisation first — nothing connects silently — and you can revoke access for Claude or any other client at any time from Era Context. Your activity log shows exactly what Claude has done on your behalf.

Era Financial Advisors LLC is SEC-registered (CRD #334404), and brokerage services run through Alpaca Securities LLC, a FINRA/SIPC member. Your data is never sold and never shared without your explicit permission. For the full breakdown, read is it safe to give AI your financial data.

Does this only work with Claude?

No. Era Context works with any MCP-compatible client — Claude, ChatGPT, OpenClaw, and dozens more. Approve each client once, the same way you approved Claude, and they all draw from the same memory. Tell Claude your emergency fund target, and ChatGPT already knows it the next time you open it — no need to re-teach it. See why financial AI memory should be portable for why that matters.

Which Era plan do you need for Claude?

The Basic tier is free and enough to follow this entire guide: two connected accounts with read-only access. Organize adds the full rules engine and read-write MCP access, so Claude can create and run automation rules on your accounts — still with your approval — instead of just reading them. Automate builds on that for heavier day-to-day use, and Operate is Era's business tier, with higher account and API limits. See pricing for the full breakdown.

What should you ask Claude once it's connected?

Start simple, then get specific:

  • "What's my current balance across all accounts?"
  • "Find every subscription I'm paying for and sort them by cost."
  • "Tag all my coffee shop transactions this year."
  • "Remember that I'm saving $500 a month toward a house down payment."
  • "Compare my spending this quarter to last quarter."

For a longer list organised by category, see 25 things to ask your AI agent about your finances. If you want Claude to handle cleanup and categorisation automatically, how to automate your finances with AI covers the rules engine in depth.

The bottom line

Claude was never missing intelligence. It was missing access. Era Context gives Claude, and any other AI you use, a live, secure connection to your actual financial life, plus memory that survives across conversations and across tools. Connect it once, and every question you ask about your money gets a real answer instead of a guess.
