Use Claude with your money: connect your UK bank
Link your UK current account to Claude through open banking, approve access in your bank's app, then ask Claude to analyse, categorise and tidy your spending.
Claude can answer from your real balances and transactions rather than figures you paste into the chat, and on a paid plan it can recategorise, tag and write rules for you as well. To set it up, link your current account and credit cards to Era through open banking, approving access in your bank's own app, then add Era Context, Era's connector for Claude, from Claude's connector directory. There's no new app to learn: you keep talking to Claude.
Era is an independent company; Claude is made by Anthropic.
How do I use Claude with my UK bank account?
Link your current account to Era through open banking, then add Era Context to Claude from Claude's connector directory and approve access. You choose your bank, approve in your bank's own app, and return to Era. Claude can then read your balances and transactions and answer questions about them.
Setting it up takes about five minutes:
- Create an Era account at era.app. The Basic tier is free.
- Link your bank through open banking. In Era, choose Connect your bank and pick your bank or building society. Era hands you over to your bank, you approve access in your bank's app or online banking, and you come back to Era. Your banking login stays with your bank, and Era never stores it.
- Add Era Context to Claude. Connect Era Context to Claude opens Era Context in Claude's connector directory. Choose Add to Claude.
- Approve access. Sign in to Era and approve the consent screen. Nothing connects until you do.
- Ask your first question. "What's in my current account, and what have I spent this week?" is a good start.
To cut off Claude alone later, open Agents, then API keys in Era, choose Revoke on the key marked Auto for Claude, then Revoke key. Claude can't get new access after that, and any access it still holds expires within an hour.
On a phone, your bank may switch you to its own app to approve. Once you've confirmed, go back to your browser and Era picks up from there.
If your bank's approval window doesn't appear, your browser has probably blocked the pop-up. Allow pop-ups for era.app and start again, or use the Open your bank connection button Era shows, which opens the approval in a new window without changing any browser settings.
Prefer to add Era to Claude by hand? In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, choose +, then Add custom connector, and paste https://context.era.app/mcp as the server URL. Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, and Claude's Free plan allows one.
To stop sharing at any point, disconnect the bank in Era. That cuts off Claude and every other assistant you've connected. For screenshots and troubleshooting, follow the full walkthrough: how to connect Claude to your bank account.
What can Claude do with my money once it's connected?
Claude can break down your spending, compare one month with another, list every recurring payment from direct debits to subscriptions, and forecast your spending for the rest of the month. It can also change things: recategorise transactions, add tags, and set standing rules that sort next month's spending for you.
Try these once you're connected:
- "How much did I spend on takeaways last month, and how does that compare with the month before?"
- "List every direct debit and subscription on my current account, biggest first."
- "Forecast my spending between now and payday."
- "Recategorise every taxi journey this year as Transport."
- "Tag everything I spent on the kitchen refit."
- "Make a rule that files every coffee shop purchase under Eating out."
Reading and analysis work on every plan. The last three change your data, so they need edit access, which starts on the Organize tier. When Claude writes a rule, it shows you the rule first, and the rule keeps running between conversations, so next month's transactions arrive already sorted. Recategorising and tagging happen straight away, and Era keeps an edit trail, so you can undo any change, yours or Claude's.
Moving money between your own accounts is in private beta and always needs your approval. Outside the private beta, Claude can read and organise your accounts, but it can't move money.

Which UK accounts can I use with Claude?
Current accounts, credit cards and savings accounts at UK banks and building societies that offer open banking. Era connects accounts across the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and 40+ countries in all. If your provider isn't listed, import a CSV export from it and Claude works from that history instead.
Start the connect flow in Era to see whether your provider is listed. If it isn't, add a manual account in Era and use Import CSV to bring in the export your online banking produces. You can also hand the file to Claude and ask it to import the transactions for you.
Why does my bank ask me to approve access again?
Open banking consent lasts for a set period, then your bank asks you to confirm it. When a connection needs renewing, Era shows it with a Reconnect button; approve in your bank's app and syncing resumes. Your categories, your rules and the goals Claude knows about are kept in Era throughout.
In Era, a connection whose consent is close to running out shows the date it expires and a Reconnect button, so you can renew before it lapses. Renewing is the same approval you gave the first time, in your bank's own app.
Does Claude remember my money goals between chats?
Yes. When you tell Claude a goal, a budget limit or a preference, Era stores it as a fact you can view, edit or delete. Claude can recall it in your next chat, and so can any other assistant you connect to Era, so you never have to explain your situation twice.
Say "remember that I'm saving for a house deposit" once, and every connected assistant can work towards it. Everything Era has stored is on the Shared memory page, under Agents in Era, where you can change a fact or remove it for good. How to set up cross-agent memory walks through it.
What does it cost to use Claude with Era?
Era's Basic tier is free and covers two connected accounts with read access, enough to follow this guide. Paid tiers add more accounts and edit access, so Claude can create rules, recategorise transactions and tag your spending for you. Current prices for every tier are on Era's pricing page.
Organize is the first tier with edit access and the full rules engine. Higher tiers add more accounts and more frequent syncing. See pricing for what each tier includes.
Era encrypts your data with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.3 in transit, never stores your banking login, never sells your data, and never uses it to train models. If you want the full picture before you connect, read is it safe to give AI your financial data.
