RBC, TD and BMO block AI agents that log in as you
RBC, TD and BMO block AI agents that log in as you, such as Meta's Muse. What it means for Canadians using ChatGPT or Claude, and how Era keeps you connected.
The agents in the news are the ones that use your bank password, such as Meta's Muse. If RBC, TD or BMO has stopped an AI agent from reaching your account, you have two good options: keep using your assistant on the numbers you already have, or link your banks to Era once and let ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini read them there. The second works whichever way the banks' rules move, because the assistant never signs in to your bank.
Which Canadian banks are blocking AI agents?
On October 28, 2026, news outlets reported that several Canadian banks, including RBC, TD, BMO, CIBC and Scotiabank, were blocking or limiting personal AI agents that sign in to online banking for a customer. No particular agent was named in the Canadian reports. The banks cited security concerns, since a program acting with your password looks a lot like someone else acting with it.
Seen as a sign of where banking is heading, it is a request for a proper way to prove who is acting for a customer. The same conversation is under way in the United States, where Meta's Muse and Instinct are among the agents being turned away, JPMorgan Chase refuses outside agents that sign in with a customer's credentials, and Wells Fargo has added terms, from 24 November 2026, that keep you liable for any AI agent you authorise until you prove you revoked it.
What does the block mean for me as a customer?
If you gave an agent your online banking login, it may now be refused, signed out or flagged. ChatGPT and Claude do not need your bank password, and in the United States they connect to banks through authorised Plaid connectors, read-only; those finance features are for US banks only. If you only ever asked an assistant general questions, nothing changes. The accounts themselves are untouched, and your money is exactly where it was.
What the block takes away is the shortcut of giving an agent your password. It does not stop you from having an assistant that knows your finances, and it is a good moment to move to a connection built for the job.
How can I keep using ChatGPT or Claude with my money?
Link your accounts to Era through your bank's own secure sign-in, so Era never sees your password, and then add Era to your assistant. From that point the assistant asks Era for balances, transactions and spending, and your bank only ever deals with Era's approved connection.
Era connects accounts across the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and 40+ countries in all, so your RBC, TD or BMO chequing account, a credit card and your investments can all sit in one place. The guides to connecting Claude to your bank account and connecting ChatGPT take about five minutes.
What about Wealthsimple, Desjardins and the credit unions?
Wealthsimple has announced its own assistant, Penny, and says ChatGPT and Claude will be able to connect from early 2027, with each action approved by the client. You do not have to wait to see your Wealthsimple accounts in an assistant, because they connect to Era today next to your big-bank accounts, and the same goes for Desjardins.
We explain the timing in Wealthsimple's ChatGPT and Claude link, explained.
What do I get from one hub that every assistant uses?
Each assistant you connect reads the same accounts, so you can ask Claude about this month's spending and ChatGPT about your savings plan and get answers from one set of numbers. What you tell one assistant is remembered by the others, so you explain your goals once.
You can share a space with a partner, have statements and pay stubs read and filed for you, and keep an eye on your financial health with the analysis behind each figure. If you want ideas to start with, try these questions to ask an AI about your money.
Is it safe, and does my bank need to have an MCP?
Your bank does not need to ship anything for this to work, and it is safe because you approve each connection yourself, you can disconnect any assistant at any time, and your data does not train AI models. The details are on two pages of their own.
We have a page on whether your Canadian bank has an MCP and one on whether it is safe to connect RBC or TD to ChatGPT or Claude.
