Is it safe to connect RBC or TD to ChatGPT or Claude?
Is it safe to connect RBC or TD to ChatGPT or Claude? What the banks' block means, who is liable, and how Era keeps your password out of the assistant.
It is safe to connect RBC, TD or any other Canadian bank to ChatGPT or Claude when your password never reaches the assistant. With Era you sign in through your bank's own secure flow, approve a limited connection, and let the assistant ask Era for answers. Handing an agent your login is the risky way, and agents that use your password, such as Meta's Muse, are the ones banks are blocking.
Why are the banks saying no?
On October 28, 2026, RBC, TD, BMO, CIBC and Scotiabank were reported to be blocking or limiting personal AI agents, and the reports named no particular agent. The agents in the news elsewhere, such as Muse and Instinct, are the ones that sign in with a customer's password. The worry is that a program acting with your password is indistinguishable from someone who has stolen it, so a bank cannot tell a helpful assistant from an attacker.
Seen as a sign of where banking is heading, it is a call for connections that prove who is acting for you. That is the kind of connection Era is built around.
What actually keeps my password safe?
You enter your password only at your bank, never in Era and never in a chat window. Your bank hands Era a limited permission to read the account, and Era keeps that permission, not your credentials. When you connect an assistant, it receives structured answers from Era and never a login of any kind.
Everything is encrypted when stored and when it travels, and the assistant sees masked account identifiers rather than full account numbers.
Who is liable if something goes wrong?
Your agreement with your bank is the starting point, and banks generally treat sharing your password as a breach of it, which is a good reason to keep the password out of the picture. A connection that never uses your password sidesteps the problem, and the link to your bank is read-only.
If you ever ask an assistant to help with a payment, the decision stays with you. Money movement through Era is in private beta, off by default for every key, and every transfer needs your approval.
What can the assistant see?
It can see balances, transactions with merchant names and categories, spending breakdowns, recurring charges, holdings and the financial context you have shared with it, such as your goals. It cannot see your password, your full account numbers or any other person's information.
Every request is written to an activity log that shows what happened, when it happened and which assistant did it, so you can check at any time.
Can I disconnect it, and does it train an AI model?
You can disconnect any assistant in a couple of taps without affecting the others, and you can end a bank link whenever you like. Your data is not sold, is not used for advertising and does not train AI models.
What do I get once it is connected?
One hub that every assistant uses, so Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini see the same accounts and share the same memory. You can share a space with a partner, have statements and pay stubs read and filed, and see your financial health in figures with the analysis behind them.
Era connects accounts across the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and 40+ countries in all. Read how Era protects your financial data, then connect Claude to your bank account.
